Ulver - Flowers of Evil (Album Review)

As someone who's been a fan of Ulver for a long time, this album was quite a letdown.                                                            Synthpop  ||  Released August 28, 2020 For a band who started out as black metal and later changed on-a-dime to an experimental electronic band with very few inhibitions, "Flowers of Evil" is completely tame, with no bite to it whatsoever. From the raw and engaging "Bergtatt", to the experimentation of "Blood Inside", the deathly beauty of "Shadows of the Sun", we've...progressed...to this. Maybe I shouldn't have been surprised...after all, the band's previous effort, "The Assassination of Julius Caesar" wasn't exactly what you would have called "innovative", but at the very least it marked a distinct shift in Ulver's everchanging musical style. This album feels like no more than c...

Nimzo Box Set - Industrial

Industrial music is an experimental genre that pulls from punk, electronic, and rock music. Industrial was popularized in the 1980s by bands such as Coil and   Einstuerzende Neubauten, who were known for an abrasive, cold and mechanical texture and flavor that for some was off-putting, but to others intriguing and aesthetically pleasing. Some of it can be quite disturbing, if we're being honest (of course, that's part of the appeal to some listeners, including me). Post-industrial and related genres came much later. They typically feature a less abrasive, smoother sound, with more embellished and polished production, while still retaining a cold and sometimes aggressive aesthetic and energy. Industrial rock, metal, and hip hop, on the other hand, typically stick with a punk ethos and jagged rawness. I know this style doesn't appeal to everyone, but for me, industrial and its subgenres and offshoots (particularly post-industrial) hold great appeal for me. In this box set, I...

15 Worst Albums (2010 - 2019): Just....Why?

My least favorite albums from the last decade. I hate all of these for various reasons; some are "just" excruciatingly boring, others make me want to perforate my eardrums with a screwdriver... Remember, all of these are my opinions and taste. If you like an album I hate, it's ok, I don't think any less of you, and I hope the feeling's mutual. NOTE: There are likely many, many deserving albums that probably could have made it onto this list. However, I generally only listen to things that I may just possibly like, and there are certain artists and albums I avoid like the plague. Since I don't rate anything that I haven't heard at least 2/3rds of, some obvious picks for a list like this are omitted.  15. CHVRCHES - Love Is Dead  ||  Synthpop  ||  2018  ||  Worst track: Really Gone 14. Drake - Views  ||  Pop Rap  ||  2016  ||  Worst track: U With Me? 13. Awolnation -  Here Come the Runts  ||  Pop Rock  ||...

Nimzo's Top 250 Albums of All Time (2022 Edition): Underground Overture

My favorite albums ever made.  Over many years, I have carefully kept track of my favorite albums, based on a number of criteria. The most important factors are varied; one album might be a powerhouse of melody and harmonies, another may be a masterpiece of atmospheric soundscapes. However, the true reasons I connect with music are often more ephemeral, and there are a fair number of genres present here. In any case, I've included some pertinent info on each album on this list that could help you decide if you'd like to try anything here. This list was taken from the old Wavy Air Blog I used to run, with some small alterations. Hope you find something that's appealing! 250. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath   ||  Heavy Metal  ||  occult, dark  ||  Released 1970  ||   UK 249. Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures   ||  Post-Punk  ||  passionate, anxious  ||  Released 1979  ||   UK 248. Scott W...
