Post-punk is a deviation from the more common punk rock of the 70s. It features more elaborate production than typical of the latter genre, with more attention to creating soundscapes while still keeping the angular guitar lines and rhythmic quality of punk rock. It also commonly features a more depressive quality to the songwriting than plain punk, and, to me, is more effective. The 80s were its heyday; below are some of my favorites from that period.
