Cold & Dark Electronic (Genre Playlist)

Electronic music spans a vast and diverse landscape, but the cold and dark subgenres hold a special place for their atmospheric depth and emotive intensity. These tracks are characterized by moody, intricate production, and often explore themes of introspection, dystopia, and the human condition. The artists in this realm push the boundaries of sound, crafting music that is both haunting and mesmerizing. The past few decades have seen a significant evolution in these subgenres, with innovation and experimentation leading to some truly unforgettable tracks. Electronic production is often associated with newer music...I don't necessarily agree with this, but there is a definite tendency towards some more recent tracks here. Nevertheless, there is a good amount of older stuff in this playlist as well. Below is an unranked (but carefully curated) playlist of some of my favorite cold and dark electronic songs from across the years. Hope you enjoy! 1. The Knife - Silent Shout  ||  S...

An Eldritch Halloween: Unsettling Music (Themed Playlist)

Halloween means different things to different people. For me, there's campy, light horror..."life's no fun without a good scare!" There is great value in that. This particular playlist, however, is devoted to less "fun" songs and more to tracks that actually creep into your brain and refuse to leave, a sour and sinking feeling settling itself on your soul. Unsettling feelings are an essential part of human experience, and should be explored, even if shallowly. Below are a selection of songs that range from mildly unsettling (like a vaguely bad dream half-forgotten after waking up) to straight up disturbing. My thanks to a few of you who contributed suggestions. Only proceed with the greatest caution, friends. 1.  Coil - Something   ||  Post-Industrial  ||  2000  ||   UK 2. In the Interest of Transparency: Aquatic Music (Themed Playlist)

The Water-Fall "With what deep murmurs through time’s silent stealth Doth thy transparent, cool, and wat’ry wealth Here flowing fall, And chide, and call, As if his liquid, loose retinue stay’d Ling’ring, and were of this steep place afraid; The common pass Where, clear as glass, All must descend Not to an end, But quicken’d by this deep and rocky grave, Rise to a longer course more bright and brave …" - Henry Vaughan As I completed the top tracks of the year posts (2010 - 2022) that I had been working on for well over a month, I thought it was time for another themed playlist. The genres represented on this list are varied, as are the moods, textures, and themes. The sequencing of the picks is very intentional, so I recommend listening in order. Thank you! 1. Nimzo Mixtape #2 - 80s Post-Punk Favorites

Post-punk is a deviation from the more common punk rock of the 70s. It features more elaborate production than typical of the latter genre, with more attention to creating soundscapes while still keeping the angular guitar lines and rhythmic quality of punk rock. It also commonly features a more  depressive quality to the songwriting than plain punk, and, to me, is more effective. The 80s were its heyday; below are some of my favorites from that period.  The format of this list: Artist - Song  ||  Album it's from  ||  Release year. Hope you enjoy this mixtape. Cheers! Bauhaus - All We Ever Wanted Was Everything  ||  The Sky's Gone Out  ||  1982 Echo & the Bunnymen - The Killing Moon  ||  Ocean Rain  ||  1984 The Cure - Disintegration  ||  Disintegration  ||  1989 The Smiths - The Headmaster Ritual  ||  Meat is Murder  ||  1985 The Chameleons - Second Skin  ||  Scri...

The Soote Season (Themed Playlist)

Henry Howard "The soote season, that bud and bloom forth brings  With green hath clad the hill and eke the vale;  The nightingale with feathers new she sings;  And turtle to her make hath told her tale.  Summer is come, for every spray now springs;  The hart hath hung his old head on the pale;  The buck in brake his winter coat he flings;  The fishes flete with new repairèd scale;  The adder all her slough away she slings;  The swift swalllow pursueth the flies small;  The busy bee her honey now she mings;  Winter is worn that was the flowers' bale.  And thus I see among these pleasant things Each care decays, and yet my sorrow springs. " To me, this poem is about observing how life goes on about you, but you still feel stuck; you can see and even appreciate the beauty of the world, but you, yourself, are unable to progress, time passing you by with the same ball-and-chain still weighing you down.  This playlist is not ent...
