Cold & Dark Electronic (Genre Playlist)

Electronic music spans a vast and diverse landscape, but the cold and dark subgenres hold a special place for their atmospheric depth and emotive intensity. These tracks are characterized by moody, intricate production, and often explore themes of introspection, dystopia, and the human condition. The artists in this realm push the boundaries of sound, crafting music that is both haunting and mesmerizing. The past few decades have seen a significant evolution in these subgenres, with innovation and experimentation leading to some truly unforgettable tracks. Electronic production is often associated with newer music...I don't necessarily agree with this, but there is a definite tendency towards some more recent tracks here. Nevertheless, there is a good amount of older stuff in this playlist as well. Below is an unranked (but carefully curated) playlist of some of my favorite cold and dark electronic songs from across the years. Hope you enjoy! 1. The Knife - Silent Shout  ||  S...

Completionist Indexing Project - Hardcore Hip Hop (hip hop in. #3)

Alphabetical index of every hardcore hip hop album I would rate a 7/10 or above.  (Related indexes: Abstract Hip Hop , Conscious Hip Hop ) Hardcore hip hop is a relatively broad blanket term; it may include the genres of "horrorcore", some "industrial hip hop", "boom bap" and "gangsta rap", along with rare incidents of other subgenres. Generally, the term hardcore hip hop is applied to an album that heavily features confrontation and aggression as a listening experience. Projects in this style are often boastful, vulgar, and hedonistic. Beats are often heavy, and the vocal delivery aggressive. Much of the genre doesn't click with me, and those that do often require me to be in a certain mood. Generally, the ones under the umbrella I come back to most often are paired with other genres and are more conceptual or thought-provoking. Nevertheless, I admittedly do enjoy a lot; these are listed below. 1. Backxwash - I Lie Here Buried With My Rings ...

Completionist Indexing Project - Conscious Hip Hop (hip hop in. #2)

Alphabetical index of every conscious hip hop album I would rate at or over 7/10. (Related indexes:  Abstract Hip Hop ) Conscious hip hop is a genre whose lyrics deal with social and political issues. It is often more poetic and subtle than other hip hop subgenres. Typically, it is less hedonistic and vulgar, and often has ties to more laid back and lyrics-based genres such as jazz rap. However, in other instances, it can be quite angry and rebellious as well, with parallels to political hip hop and other protest music. 1. Avantdale Bowling Club - Trees  ||  Jazz Rap, Conscious Hip Hop  ||  2022  ||  lush, drugs, mellow  ||  USA  ||  8/10     Key tracks: Rent 2 High, Without You, Still Feel Broke 2. Blu & Exile - Below the Heavens  ||  Conscious Hip Hop, West Coast Hip Hop, Boom Bap, Jazz Rap  ||  2007  ||  uplifting, mellow, urban  ||  USA  ||...

Completionist Indexing Project - Abstract Hip Hop (hip hop in. #1)

Alphabetical index of all abstract hip hop albums I would rate a 7/10 or higher. (Related indexes:  Conscious Hip Hop ) Abstract hip hop is atypical of the parent genre in that lyrics are often cryptic and rely more on metaphor and stream-of-consciousness than shock value and hedonism. These elements can still be present, but the unique songwriting and lyrics lend a distinct flavor. Abstract hip hop is often paired with other primary genres. 1. Aesop Rock - The Impossible Kid  ||  Abstract Hip Hop, East Coast Hip Hop  ||  2016  ||  cryptic, complex, conscious  ||  USA  ||  9/10     Key tracks: Blood Sandwich, Shrunk, Rings 2. Ağaçkakan - Uyuyan Adam  ||  Abstract Hip Hop, Experimental Hip Hop, Industrial Hip Hop  ||  2013  ||  anxious, rhythmic, suspenseful  ||  Turkey  ||  9/10     Key tracks:  Palto ve Kozmos, Prusya Mavis...

Dark Singer/Songwriter Albums

"Singer/songwriter" is a genre of music that heavily relies on lyrics and songwriting, rather than elaborate accompanying instrumentation. It is closely related to folk music, but they are distinct.  A list about my favorite dark singer/songwriter albums has been on the backburner for a while; it was about time. Dark lyrics and songwriting can be incredibly evocative and visceral, or poetically cathartic. I will first list my favorite dark singer/songwriter albums, followed by a separate list of records of the style which I want to check out. There are many subgenres that can be applied in addition to the style (mostly different kinds of folk); these will be listed when applicable. Dark Singer/Songwriter Favorites 1. Eels - Electro-Shock Blues  ||  Indie Pop, Singer/Songwriter  ||  1998  ||   USA 2. PJ Harvey - To Bring You My Love  ||  Alternative Rock, Singer/Songwriter  ||  1995  ||   UK 3. Nick Cave & The...
