"Gaian Doom is a subgenre of doom metal that combines elements of traditional doom metal with folk and ambient music. It is characterized by slow, heavy riffs, often with acoustic guitar accompaniment, and often incorporates elements of nature, such as birdsong, wind, and rain. The lyrics often focus on themes of nature, the environment, and the human condition. The music is often melancholic and introspective, and can be quite dark and oppressive." (attrib. Volt.fm ) Additionally, the vocals are pretty much always female. There seems to be a lot of overlap with genres such as gothic rock, ethereal wave, and some heavier variants of psych music. These are in no particular order. As I am relatively new to the genre, this is a starter kit instead of a box set. Already I can tell it's going to be one of my all time favorites; the Spotify playlist below will continue to be added to as I find more favorites. The format is: #. My top played songs of the year so far. Fun facts:  - The average age of these tracks (by release year) is about 21 years. - The top genres on this list are subgenres of rock, pop, and electronic: particularly, indie / alt rock, art pop, and trip hop. - 56% of the vocalists are male, 26% are female, 10% are instrumental, 4% are non-binary, and 4% feature female and male vocalists. - I'm limiting this to one song per artist, to keep it interesting.
