Listening Habits: camusunder's 2023 in Review

"'Tis midnight's holy hour, and silence now  Is brooding like a gentle spirit o'er  The still and pulseless world. Hark! on the winds  The bell's deep tones are swelling,—'tis the knell  Of the departed year." George D. Prentice Another year of music. I'm coming close to the end of my college experience, but there's still work to be done...despite, and necessarily because of, this, music has been a refuge and a balm for me. Though it might seem that the rolling of the boulder up the hill is pointless, at least there are things that make it bearable. Below are my 100 top played artists of the year. The format is: #.  Artist    ||  Genres  ||  Top 3 Most Played Songs. As always, this list is important to me to record my musical taste's development and my listening habits, but I also hope that anyone reading can get some good recommendations from it. Be sure to search for your favorite genres! Cheers. Happy Holidays.

Top 50 Hip Hop Albums of All Time

Hip hop is an exceptionally varied and interesting genre. It first emerged in the late 1970s, quickly becoming a staple of African American culture and interests. Over time, it evolved and became especially prevalent from the late 1980s to the 1990s. Today it is among the most popular genres of music, not only in African American communities - it has devoted fans across the world. Typical attributes of the music: rhythmic, lyrical (often political), and conscious. A certain level of hedonism is also common. It should be noted that, though spoken word and rhythm are extremely important and vital to the genre, melody is also incorporated in various ways, including background and supporting singers and instrumentals that focus on melody rather than purely rhythm.  There are a wide variety of subgenres of hip hop. My favorites include jazz rap, industrial, and experimental hip hop. Below is a ranked list of my 50 favorite hip hop records. If you choose to listen to the playlist on Spot...

King Hannah Interview Compilation

King Hannah are a severely underappreciated band from the United Kingdom. Their debut, "I'm Not Sorry, I Was Just Being Me" was one of the best rock records to come out of 2022. The album featured a blend of alternative rock, blues rock, psych rock, and, eclectically, some trip hop-ish elements. The songwriting was stellar, the vocals low-key and deadpan but oddly appealing. The staple members of the band are Craig Whittle (guitar) and Hannah Merrick (vocals). A note: since this is a recent band, there are fewer interviews to sift through (i.e. for multiple release years / eras / what have you. Still, there weren't a dearth of pieces; this record was fairly well anticipated.  Related lists: Chelsea Wolfe Interview Compilation Below I've compiled some interesting interviews from the dynamic duo, with standout quotes included. *DISCLAIMER: I CLAIM NO OWNERSHIP OF THESE INTERVIEWS. An Eldritch Halloween: Unsettling Music (Themed Playlist)

Halloween means different things to different people. For me, there's campy, light horror..."life's no fun without a good scare!" There is great value in that. This particular playlist, however, is devoted to less "fun" songs and more to tracks that actually creep into your brain and refuse to leave, a sour and sinking feeling settling itself on your soul. Unsettling feelings are an essential part of human experience, and should be explored, even if shallowly. Below are a selection of songs that range from mildly unsettling (like a vaguely bad dream half-forgotten after waking up) to straight up disturbing. My thanks to a few of you who contributed suggestions. Only proceed with the greatest caution, friends. 1.  Coil - Something   ||  Post-Industrial  ||  2000  ||   UK 2. Lustmørd - Heresy Part 1   ||  Dark Ambient  ||  1990  ||   UK 3. Radiohead - Climbing Up the Walls   ||  Alternative...
