The Soote Season (Themed Playlist)

Henry Howard
"The soote season, that bud and bloom forth brings
With green hath clad the hill and eke the vale;
The nightingale with feathers new she sings;
And turtle to her make hath told her tale.
Summer is come, for every spray now springs;
The hart hath hung his old head on the pale;
The buck in brake his winter coat he flings;
The fishes flete with new repairèd scale;
The adder all her slough away she slings;
The swift swalllow pursueth the flies small;
The busy bee her honey now she mings;
Winter is worn that was the flowers' bale.
And thus I see among these pleasant things
Each care decays, and yet my sorrow springs."

To me, this poem is about observing how life goes on about you, but you still feel stuck; you can see and even appreciate the beauty of the world, but you, yourself, are unable to progress, time passing you by with the same ball-and-chain still weighing you down.

This playlist is not entirely depressive (though a certain kind of melancholy pervades). Ever since we went over this poem in my Critical Literature Theory class, it's been stuck in my head and I found externalizing it in music form useful.

Nimzo's Top 500 Albums of All Time (2023 Edition; Part 1/2)

*Phew...* this was a hard list to put together! I decided to break this into two parts, as I wanted a longer list than I posted last year but need it to be manageable (doin' school at the same time).  This was meticulously put together and thought out. To some it may seem counter-intuitive to rank music, but over time I've developed systems to compare and rate albums based on enjoyment and the impact they've had on me. Nevertheless, this sort of extensive list is very hard to do. In any case, I thoroughly enjoyed the process of making it. A couple of little factoids about this half of the list: Percentage of male vocalists - 50%; female vocalists - 27.2%; male + female vocalists - 12.4%; instrumental - 10%; non-binary - 0.4%. Top sub-genres - Alternative Rock, Post-Punk, Indie Rock, Trip Hop, Art Pop, Industrial. Oldest album on the list -  Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus (1957). The format: #. Artist - Album   ||  genres  ||  Release Year...

Her and the eponymous band's style is versatile, and, contrary to the views of some detractors, not chameleonic; all of her work is very dark and often gothic, but there are many different facets and angles of her own unique darkness that she comes at in her work. Genres she has explored include ethereal wave, dark folk, doom metal, and gothic rock. In this ranking, I will list my favorite studio albums in reverse order. Underneath, I will rank my 50 favorite songs of hers. 8. Mistake in Parting  ||  Alternative Rock  ||  2006  ||  5.5/10 7. Birth ...

The top half.  Some interesting (to me, at least) facts and statistics about this list:  My #1 album changed from last year. There was slightly less movement in the top 25 than last year, but still a few changes. Below that there were quite a few shifts and newcomers. The highest ranked newcomer to the list is  19. Arca - Arca (2017).  Percentage of male vocalists  - 54%, female vocalists - 29.2%, instrumental - 10.8%, male + female vocalists - 6%. Most obscure:  171. Denali - The Instinct (2003). Least obscure:  213. The Be atles - Abbey Road (1969).
